Which oz (size) do I get?

Oz stands for ounce.

Gloves come in "Size weights" so 18oz is a big heavy glove, and 8oz is a small light glove.

The best glove size for you depends on your body weight and the intended use, with heavier gloves (14-18 oz) for sparring, and lighter ones (6-12 oz) for bag and pad work. For a general idea, here is a weight-based guide:

For Bag/Pad Work

  • Bag/Pad Work: 8oz-12oz  Think of them as 8oz = XS, 10oz = S/M, 12oz = M, 14oz = L .

For Sparring

Weight/size (sparring means getting in the ring and hitting each other)

  • Sparring: Heavier gloves (12-18 oz) check weights below for a rough guide.

  • Under 110 lbs (50 kg): 12 oz
  • 110-150 lbs (50-68 kg): 12-14 oz
  • 150-175 lbs (68-79 kg): 14-16 oz
  • Over 175 lbs (79 kg): 16-18 oz

For All Round Use

  • For an “all rounder” it’s best to get your/their sparring size eg. 14oz.

Other Factors

  • Hand size and comfort: if the wearer has larger size hands they may want to go up a size.
  • Your goals: If you're a beginner, start with a versatile glove like 12 or 14 oz that can be used for most training. If you have specific goals, consult with a coach or trainer.

What do boxers need?

Pad/Work and fitness training

For training where no sparring is involved (hitting each other) all the fighter needs is gloves, boots, hand wraps/inner gloves, skipping rope and apparel.

Sparring and serious training

For sparring a fighter will need more equipment to protect themselves and their training partners. They'll need sparring gloves, head guard, groin guard, Boots, hand wraps/inner gloves and apparel.

(If the person you're buying for is missing any of these items, or they're old its best to get a new one to ensure the safety of their training)
